6 Ways to measure your Partner's Ring Size - without them knowing

Finding out what your partner’s ring size - without them knowing - can feel like a massive challenge.

It’s an important piece of information to have at the start of your Engagement Ring Design process as it affects design choices and costings too.

It’s one of the questions we get asked most, so we’ve put together our Top 6 Engagement Finger measuring methods to help you out....

1) Download a Ring Measuring App...

The joys of App technology mean that you can measure your partner’s finger size using your phone! Simply download this free app and select a ring that you know they wear often. Let your designer know which finger and hand they normally wear the ring on and your Jeweller should be able to make an educated guess as to what size their ring finger is.

It’s likely that the ring will need to be re-sized post-proposal, but at least this measurement means the ring won’t be too far off perfect.

N.B. This method won’t work so well on rings with stones, so try and find a plain band ring to measure instead.

2) Sneakily borrow one of their rings...

This is always a great option! Again, let your designer know which finger and hand they normally wear the ring on, and choose a ring that they wear often. With this method the ring can be any type of ring which can make it more convenient than the measuring app method.

3) Get Drawing...

Grab a pencil and paper and take a look in their jewellery box. Again, choose a ring they wear often and simply draw carefully around the inside of the ring. Then measure the diameter of the circle with a trusty ruler and you’ll have their ring finger size.

4) The String Method...

This is an option if your partner sleeps like a log. You’ll need some string, or a ribbon and a pen. Make sure they’re 100% asleep and then slip the string around their finger and mark the cross over point with a pen. Then measure the length with a trusty ruler.

N.B. It’s a good idea to make sure you have a good alibi prepared if they do wake up…

5) Enlist their Best Friend...

Fill their best friend, or close family member, in on your plan and get them to give you a hand. Your partner might already know their ring size for example and be able to tell them straight up. Or the friend could get them to try on one of their rings and see how it fitted…

Best Friends are a resourceful bunch, so this is often a good shout!

6) Compare finger sizes...

If you’re really stuck you could try on one of their rings yourself. Remember where on your finger the ring fitted to and have your jeweller measure that point. It’s a less than ideal method, but it will give some idea of sizing for your jeweller to start from.
