How to choose the perfect Yellow Diamond for the Engagement Ring of her dreams…

We’ve seen a massive increase in interest when it comes to stunning Yellow Diamond Engagement rings this year. And to be honest, they’re completely mesmerising stones, so we’re not surprised!

When it comes to purchasing any sort of Diamond it’s important to understand how the stones are graded. Everyone has heard of the 4 C’s, but what actually are they?

The 4 C’s that make up the GIA Diamond Grading system are as follows:

  1. Cut
  2. Clarity
  3. Colour
  4. Carat weight

I like to describe each of the 4 C’s as being movable sliders, which can be played around with to make sure that you get the best, most stunning diamond for your budget and priorities. (If you would like more in depth information on the 4C’s we’ve written another blog which you can check out here).

With Yellow Diamonds the 4 C’s are still crucial to think consider ahead of time as it’s important to know what your priorities are within your budget; is it Size? Sparkle? Or Cut? Your priorities for where the budget is spent will determine which stones a jeweller shows you.

Things deviate a little from the colourless Diamond’s 4 C’s grading system with Yellow Diamonds when when it comes to Colour. With Yellow Diamonds the Colour grading scale is a little different - and really crucial to get right!

With colourless diamonds the Colour scale goes like this:

diamond grading system from colourless to more yellow coloured stones

The aim being to buy the best colourless diamond you can for that stunningly classic ice sparkle diamond effect.

With Yellow diamonds the colour grading goes like this:

The most desirable, and therefore the most expensive, colour is the 'Fancy' grade - but this colour may not be too everyone’s taste. So I would encourage you not to be swayed by this, but to chose the colour grade based on which tone speaks to you the most.
