The Family Heirloom Jewellery Dilemma

The double edged dilemma of inheriting extremely sentimental, highly valuable, but completely unwearable Family Heirloom Jewellery is something our clients come to us with a lot.

On the one hand they love the memories associated with the person who’s jewellery it once was, but on the other the jewellery just isn’t to their taste. It’s often outdated, too big, unfashionable or just not something they’d wear in a million years! So what to do about it?

Previously clients have simply left the often very valuable jewellery languishing in a safe and treated themselves to brand new jewels. But, in 2023, with such a focus on repairing, reusing and repurposing as much as we can, buying new jewellery whilst leaving inherited Family jewels, unworn is becoming less and less acceptable. After all, when we can reuse pretty much every part of the jewellery heirloom to create a brand new modern and wearable piece of jewellery, a redesign seems like a no-brainer!

This dilemma is what a recent client came to us with. She had been lucky enough to inherit a show stopping Victorian Diamond and Pearl Brooch, but it just wasn’t being worn. She set us the challenge of designing a range of modern, wearable, but eye-catching jewellery using all the metal and stones from the antique brooch.

Crescent moon shaped brooch made of diamonds

We took the brief and ran with it, creating a plethora of diamond pieces to restock her jewellery box with. We repurposed the unloved diamond brooch into; a pair of diamond earring, two diamond necklaces and eternity band and multi-stone diamond ring. Using all of the 14ct metal to set the European Old Cut Diamonds in. The heirloom Diamonds are now being loved, worn and admired as much as her great-granny had worn the original brooch.
